The rather abrupt ending to both Okonkwos life, and the novel, strike a final discordant note to the song of a man who never truly found peace or happiness in his situation. Throughout his life, Okonkwo struggled to be a man of substance and standing, a man to be respected and feared throughout the villages of the Umuofia. However, no matter how high he rose Okonkwo was perpetually beset by fears of failure and haunted by the weakness of his father. It can be said that Okonkwo cultivates his masculinity as a defense of personal honor in the face of potentially overwhelming circumstances in an antagonistic universe (Osei-Nyame 151). In a culture where masculine and feminine are clearly delineated, where the word agbala not only means woman, but also refers to weak and lazy men, Okonkwo would have all know, in no uncertain terms, that he is indeed a man worthy of great respect. Throughout much of the novel, it appears that the only one who is not sure of Okonkwos worth is Okonkwo himself. Ekwefi however never considers this; she is simply a mother in fear for her only child. Okonkwo is the one who waits anxiously at home, fearful of angering the god. As is often the case, when it comes to matters of spirit, and the heart, the women are often the ones to take the lead and face their fears, especially when the life of a child is on the line. However, the reader cannot help but consider this defiance in light of the fact that the downfall and exile of Okonkwo and his family happens a mere two days after the pseudo-underworld journey of Ekwefi and Ezinma. This episode caused the final snap of anger that set Okonkwo upon the unfortunate messenger with his machete followed by his own suicide. Even knowing of these events, the British official, the district commissioner, cannot bring himself to truly care about the feelings that led to this incident. It is seen as only one more example of the savage ways of the primitive culture. The behavior of Britain during the colonial period is a well-known and much belaboured point but at the time the novel was written, much was still coming out, and many of the subjugated cultures had only just begun to push back, requesting, demanding, and fighting for their independence. Which mean, it does not matter if things were good or bad, right or wrong, they just follow and do them without any thinking. Therefore, there are not too many people would like to be a normal, thoughtful nor neutral person. However, in the novel, The Great Gatsby, by Scott Fitzgerald, one of the character name is Nike Carroway, he was the good and neutral narrator. It was because, in the novel, he analyzed all of the things with regard to accuracy of observation. In The Great Gatsby, when Mr.Gatsby told Vick he wanted to return the past over again with his lover- Daisy, Nike Carroway warned him to give it up, because it was impossible. Unforturately, Mr.Gatsby was not believe it. So at the end, Mr.Gatsby's dream still had not came true because Daisy did not break up with Tom and go with him. It can be seen in the last chapter on the novel, when Gatsby was murder, Daisy wen t to somewhere else with her husband, and did not go to Gatsby's funeray. I called up Daisy half and hour after we found him, called her instinctively and without hersitation. But she and Tom had gone away early that afternoon, and taken baggage with them. Therefore, Nike Carroway's analysis was right by these clear observation. However, Nike Carroway is a good narrator, he sees everything happen and does not trust everybody easily. I personally doubt if they are just staying together because they are afraid of the unknown or do they think they’ll never find somebody better? In my opinion you haven’t really experienced life when you go and settle down with somebody you met in High School. In the High School age you are still trying to figure out who you are in life, develop characteristics and are very influential of others. So is it a good idea to decide who you are gonna spend the rest of your life with in a stage of age you are still trying to find yourself? The twenties are dedicated to just you. You go out and travel, explore what you ever dreamt of and live your own life. Of course it is always challenging to be single and go on dates. No doubt about that! But being single and not â€Å"tied down† offer you experiences which enlarge your personal horizon immense. The kinds of different people you meet and experiences you’ll have, if bad or good, will help you figure out who you are and what you want in life and certainly in a relationship. The biggest fear I had if I were married with 21 is what happens if you get divorced. You don’t know a life without the person you met as a teenager and probably can’t imagine anything like that.
